Stephen Andrews, Visual Artist

Stephen Andrews is a visual artist originally from Sarnia, Ontario, who works in drawing, animation, and painting, and he has recently added ceramics and choreography to the mix. Over the last thirty years, he has exhibited his work in Canada, the US, Brazil, Scotland, France, and Japan. His work is shown in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Belkin Art Gallery and many private collections. His work deals with memory, identity, and technology, and their representations in various media. The different looks of mechanical reproduction, whatever they may be, are rendered by hand in an attempt to represent both the message and the means by which it is delivered. The handmade aspect lends a certain trustworthiness that cannot be assumed with the technologically produced image. Stephen lives and works in Toronto, Ontario.

“For several decades, Stephen Andrews has grappled with the fragile state of our world with inventiveness and commitment. The effects of AIDS, escalating warfare and surveillance, and the de-centered world of global capitalism have made an indelible mark upon his work. He explores these issues with an acute awareness of instability.

The breadth of Andrews’ vision is rooted in experience of wide travels, exchange with colleagues at home and afar, and a curiosity about the world around him in which he strives to find a personal place connected to the larger narrative of contemporary life.

An active presence in the art scene, with national and international recognition, Stephen Andrews has helped shape the critical and international climate of Canadian contemporary art, supporting emerging artists with exceptional generosity, addressing HIV/AIDS, censorship, and labour and anti-globalization politics.”
